Chris Klondike Masuak

How many guitars do you need on stage to ensure 100% that you’ll never need to borrow the support act’s $99 Epiphone Les Paul Junior to finish the gig?
One!

You’re playing at the Gathering Festival and touring the east coast with The Screaming Tribesman, backing this up with a Hitmen Tour as well as promoting your new album, Workhorse with Klondike’s North 40. Do you ever sleep? Any tips for staying sane on the road?
There’s plenty of time to sleep when you die! And, I can sleep ANYWHERE!

I’ve finally learned to not take things too seriously. I let everyone have their freakout if they have to and I don’t need to get involved. I try to stay focused and professional and communicate what I need with the crew and make sure I get what I need to make the gig work! I resist the temptation to party every night and I hit the tour bus fresh as a daisy every morning. There’s not much time to exercise so every time we get to a new town I take out my compass and explore, making sure I know which direction it is back to the hotel or sound check.

Mostly, I still love guitars and I love playing. I don’t feel like I need to prove anything to anyone and just enjoy the privilege and luck that I have.

What is your best memory of your times with the  Hitmen?
One of them HAS to be driving with Johnny Kannis and Jimmy Barnes both bellowing away in the back seat all the way from Sydney to Adelaide! That was one hell of a noisy trip!

Who is The Hitmen peacekeeper? Who sets the rules for acceptable decorum on tour.
The guys are actually very well behaved. The lead singer and drummer are both attention seeking ADHD types, but that’s to be expected!

What is the weirdest thing you have ever had to autograph for a fan? Is there a limit beyond which autographing is unacceptable/unsanitary/dangerous practice?
Are you suggesting that our fans are unsanitary? I recently autographed a young lady’s thigh. A bit later her boyfriend came over and asked me to sign his, too! Then they posted photos on facebook. They’d had the autograph tattooed! It looked great!

Greg Lake from Emerson, Lake and Palmer refused to go anywhere on tour without his Persian Rug; is there anything Chris Masuak simply refuses to tour without taking along?
Back in the Tribesmen heyday I’d insist on the crew lugging a full set of weights for me to use backstage! Fortunately for the crew, all I need to remember to bring along now is my sense of humour!

Only a set of weights!!! Chris neglected to mention his old dressing road case that had a dressing room practice amp, heater to keep his guitars warm in winter, pink guitar stand and at least five pink picks taped to this mic stand. Oh, and an e-bow in a little cardboard holder with K gaffed on it with white tape.
