How would you describe your playing style?
When I first started I was all about epic ‘cock-rock’ solos, but now I’ve taken this love of solos and toned it down a notch to more tasteful licks and fills that fit in better with our punk-rock style.
First axe:
My first guitar was actually one my Dad and I made together when I was 10 years old. It was a black stratocaster copy with Dimarzio pick-ups; 2 single coils and a humbucker in the bridge, with a floyd rose tremolo. It had a narrower neck than most strats, a little too narrow actually, the 1st string would sometimes slip off the edge of the fretboard around the 12-22nd frets.
Current axe:
2005 Gibson Les Paul Custom in White. It’s heavy on the shoulders but sounds awesome. I’ve left it all original, except for the dice knobs I installed on the volume and tone knobs.
Rig/pedals:
I use a Mesa Boogie Stiletto Deuce 100 watt Head through a Mesa 2 x 12 Cab with Vintage 30 Speakers. On the pedal board I like to keep it pretty simple to keep tap-dancing to a minimum. I use a MXR 90 Phaser, Artec Analogue Delay, Jim Dunlop 95-Q Wah, and Boss TU-2 Tuner, all through a Sennheiser Evolution Wireless System.
Secret weapon:
My Furry Spinning Guitar! I’ve slapped an old-school ‘ZZ-Top Style’ Spinner on the back of this old Cimar guitar, attached my body-pack wireless to it and covered it in fake tiger fur. This one makes pretty popular at the High School Shows because I tell the kids I had to hunt down 7 tigers with my bare hands just to get the fur. The drummer from The Mission in Motion had a go at spinning this guitar but the headstock hit him in the face and pretty much broke his nose! Ah drummers…
